How we work
Four things to know before you hand us a renewal
We are paid by commission, and we tell you how much
Usually between 10% and 20% of the premium, shown on the invoice. Where a fee would cost you less, on a large fleet or farm, we say so and charge the fee instead.
Every renewal goes back out to the market
Not re-issued with last year’s insurer and a rise. About a third of our renewals move each year; the ones that stay put stay because we could not beat them.
A risk that does not fit goes to an underwriter
Thatch, a flat roof, a listed frontage, a fleet with a 22-year-old driver, a workshop with a spray booth. A comparison site declines these; we place them by phone.
We act for you, not for the insurer
That is the legal position of a broker, and it matters most at claim time. When a settlement is short, the person arguing is on your side of the table.
Farms were the first thing we insured
The firm started above a saddler's in Tanner’s Yard, placing cover for farms in the Clun and Teme valleys. Farms are still about a fifth of the book; the rest is the houses, shops, vans and workshops of the towns around them.
We visit. A farm renewal starts with a walk round the yard; a shop renewal with a look at the stock room in December. It is the only way to know what the schedule should say.
